European public libraries in concerted action

between library agencies in Europe founded between library agencies in Europe founded NAPLE Association

It has been obvious for some time that there is a need for growing European co-operation among organisms in charge of and taking care of public library structures at national level. Consequently institutions dealing with government responsibilities in the public library area from four countries (Ireland, Netherlands, Portugal and Denmark) had invited to a meeting immediately after the conference European Public Libraries in Development which took place in Copenhagen on 3.-4. October last. At this meeting the association NAPLE was founded.

NAPLE stands for National Authorities for Public Libraries in Europe, and the association will primarily deal with information and strategy advisory tasks. 23 countries expressed their positive wish to join the association. The four founding countries and UK form the first executive board. A NAPLE homepage has been organised by the Danish National Library Authority at the address www.bs.dk/naple, and a closed discussion list is planned for early next year.
